Aku rasa ini ngga perlu introduction lagi. It's an Empire Conquest Game in Fantasy World. If by that tagline you are not sold to the game, then this game is not for you. Dan habis baca rulenya, kurang lebih sesuai kok dengan PC gamenya.

On the other hand, RuneWars, yang dulu adalah yang paling mendekati dari HOMM the boardgame, get Revised edition! Dengan med-size box dan harga "relatif" lebih murah, ini bener2 jadi dilema.

Yang mana, dari aku baca2, kekurangannya cuman 2:
- No 3d mountains :no:
- Player boardnya paperstock, bukan cardboard kaya dulu

English Rules
Changes from previous edition

Rulewise, perubahannya cukup signifikan, walau sedikit. Tidak ada lagi abrupt end, heroes punya sedikit pengaruh di battle, dan semua ambiguity cleared. All in all, it's better game than previous edition.

So, both scratch the same itch, only doing some things with mechanical differences. Unless km kolektor fantasy genre (kaya aku kolektor Civ genre), km bakal cukup puas dengan salah satu kok. But which one to choose? Let's have a face off!

THE FACE OFF

Both have:
- 2-4 Players
- 4 different faction
- Playing time 180 minutes
- Empire Conquest Game in Fantasy World


In that regard, here are the differences, starting from the components

MAP - Square (MMH) vs Hex (RW)
Normally aku lebih suka hex drpd square, tapi hex di RW melambangkan big area, bukan 1 petak buat 1 unit. Jadi secara variasi map features, lebih banyak MMH.
Personal preferences: Tied

Unit & Cities - Token & Wooden Figures (MMH) vs Plastic Figures & Token (RW)
It's awesome to see plastic figures, but also awesome to see wooden city figures. Tapi secara functional emang MMH harus token, karena perlu di stack, dan statusnya bisa ditaruh di tokennya, instead separate sheet.
Personal preferences: Tied

Heroes - War General (MMH) vs Spy Agent (RW)
Hero kayanya separate game di RW, questing2 sendiri tanpa ngefek di war. Dengan rule updatepun walo bisa ngefek ke battle, efeknya minimum. Sedang MMH hero ikutan perang. In fact, unit hanya bisa jalan jika dibawa hero. Walo di MMH heronya per faction spesifik sih, unlike RW yg bisa cross faction. Tapi secara gameplay, efeknya lebih besar MMH.
Personal preferences: MMH

Heroes Development - Skill based (MMH) vs Stat based (RW)
Kalau ini sih jelas sekali. Upgradenya sangat boring cuman nambah 1 ato 2 stat di RW, sedang di MMH bisa milih2 skill kaya di Mage Knight

Treasure - 2 steps (MMH) vs 1 step (RW)
Kalo dapet treasure di MMH, bisa milih beberapa benda2 normal (xp, gold, resources), dan items. Itemsnya sih kurang lebih sama dengan RW, punya ability. TAPI, kalo km liat daftar itemnya di MMH, variasinya ngga begitu banyak. Menurutku lebih intersting RW

Resources - 2 types (MMH) vs 3 types (RW)
Karena aku tipe org yg suka resource management, semakin banyak semakin oke bagiku. Dan di RW mekaniknya cukup unik (have or not), bukan gain and loss kaya biasanya.

Winning - Specific number of VP (MMH) vs Dragon Rune (RW)
Kurang lebih sama sih, cuman di MMH lebih banyak yg harus diacquire, sedang di RW ada sedikit elemen bluffingnya. Both juga end pada specific number of turns.
Personal preferences: Tied

Turn Structure - 3 action per round (MMH) vs 1 action per round (RW)
Ini kurasa cuman masalah event aja sih. Di RW eventnya lebih sering. Keduanya sama2 butuh cooldown (yaitu kartu action sebelumnya ngga bisa dipake selama beberapa waktu), so overall ini ngga jauh beda. Tapi secara feeling MMH lebih banyak yg bisa dilakuin.

Combat - Dice and till death (MMH) vs Cards and 1 round (RW)
Dice is good for combat, and even better kalo bisa ada cara untuk manipulate. Aku rasa bakal tetep lebih seru di MMH meski keduanya sama2 punya special ability di unitnya.

Building & Recruitment - Different Buildings, Capital level for better units (MMH) vs Add-ons, resource determine units that can be recruited (RW)
Berbeda, tapi kalo menurutku sendiri lebih masuk akal building progressionnya MMH, meski kekurangannya MMH hanya 1 capital, sedang RW bisa memiliki beberapa stronghold.

Events - One event deck (MMH) vs Different for each season (RW)
Theoretically, event itu untuk menambah flavor dalam game. Dan different event for different season harusnya mempunyai richer flavor. But practically, ngga terlalu ngefek sih menurutku. Mungkin karena maennya blm byk, jadi belum terlalu familiar, so basically kerasa sama aja dibanding 1 event deck.

Magic Cards - Scroll cards (MMH) vs Tactic Cards (RW)
Scroll card hanya bisa diplay untuk specific hero (yang punya ability untuk play that card), sedang Tactic cards di play oleh faction (ga ada restriction lain). Flavorwise, aku lebih milih MMH, tetapi pengalaman dari SM:Civ tactic cards itu seperti senjata pembalik keadaan, yang bisa dimainkan dengan timing tertentu yg bisa membedakan good play ato ngga. So, menurutku oke juga kalo special cards itu bisa dimaenin faction instead hero.
Personal preferences: Tied

Objective and Quests - None (MMH) vs For Faction and Hero (RW)
Ini yg jelas kurang dari MMH, no quest or objective. Jadi purpose vpnya sudah terlihat jelas, tanpa ada path lain. Walau memang di RW tujuan objective dan quest itu untuk vp (dragon runes), tapi at least memberi variasi untuk pursuenya.
Personal preferences: RW


So, MMH win by small margin. Permasalahannya, RW punya satu hal yaitu:

Secara garis besar, ini tambahannya:
- Additional Units, Events, Objectives, Quests, Tactics, Map, City
- More intersting (and flavorful) Quest and additional City
- Tactic card yg bisa dipakai sebagai fate card (more way to manipulate luck)
- Tambahan development card untuk menambah special ability tiap faction, serta capital
- Hero bisa jadi war general

All in all, semuanya adalah improvements yang baik.


CONCLUSION
Jika compare hanya base game version, mending MMH. Tapi jika tambah exp (yg mana MMH masi ga taw kapan), mending RW. Jadi, pilih yang sesuai kebutuhan :D. My work here is done.

Gue lagi mempertimbangkan apakah perlu game conquest yang lebih kompleks dari Nexus Ops. Apalagi homemade Nexus Ops gue gambar unitnya dari Heroes of Might & Magic III :lol: HMM rada terlalu cluttered sih buat gue. Mikir-mikir mau Runewars apa Game of Thrones.

Heroes versi board game ini beda genre ama versi PC. Kalo di PC gamenya turn-based strategy, combat merupakan elemen utama dimana semua building dan resource manajemen ditujukan untuk upgrade army supaya menang lawan boss. Buat fans Heroes (kayak gue) mending di research dulu sebelom mutusin buat beli karena appeal gamenya gak sepenuhnya sama.

Heroes versi boardgame sepertinya bergenre 4X, bukan turn-based strategy. Nah kalo dirangkum Xnya satu2 menurut perbandingan OP, menurut gue Rune Wars unggul di eXpand dan eXploit, sedangkan Heroes unggul di eXterminate. Dan Keduanya seri di eXplore.

Again, just an impression. Kalo gue dikasih gratis tapi disuru milih satu, gue milihnya Rune Wars. game 4X kompleksitas combat ga terlalu penting, yang penting combatnya balance (dalam arti ga ada combo yang game breaking) dan ga terlalu mengandalkan luck player (kayak Risk).

Kalo aku sih tetep milih yg lebih kompleks ya :). Nexus Ops memang oke, tapi karena terlalu ringan (for me), gamenya sendiri hanya sekedar secondary, jadinya kita bermain against opponents. Player lawan bener2 menentukan challenge dari game itu (Nexus Ops). Kompleksitas di MMH dan RW, menurutku kompleksitas yg bagus, sama seperti TI3 ato Civ, yang mana membuat gamenya ngga sekedar secondary, jadi we are playing against opponents AND the game. Jadi in case lawannya ngga terlalu challenging, we still have some satisfaction at the end of game karena we still "beat" the game. Again, that's for me :).

Tapi secara kompleksitas, menurutku RW sedikiiiit lebih kompleks dibanding MMH, jadi kalo km pass MMH karena alasan terlalu kompleks tapi mikir2 buat RW menurutku rada kontradiksi :D.

Kalo yg single playernya gameplaynya emang gitu, cuman dulu aku cukup sering maen vs player, jadi utamanya bukan lawan boss, tapi eliminate other player (kalo ngga salah juga ada time limit dan hitung score, tapi lupa). Aku juga lebih senang custom game against NPC instead campaignnya. So, as far as against other player, menurutku ini cukup sesuai. Karena pasti bakal lama kalo berusaha eliminate, jadi diganti menjadi VP buat bg, ya menurutku sih oke2 aja.
