The Antecedents of Pachisi

Nyout (known also as Yut), a game from Korea, is considered by many authorities to be the forerunner of Pachisi. Historian Stewart Culin, among others, wrote it was being played as early as 1122 BCE, when the kingdom of Korea was formed, but author H.J.R. Murray said there is no real evidence of this. The earliest account dates from around 1545. Nyout—for two to four players or two teams—uses six sticks, rounded on one side, flat on the other, instead of beans or dice. The board has a round or square track around the outside with a cross in the middle, which was unusual except for Mayan or Aztec games.
The Mayan Game (it’s real name is unknown) was played in Central America in the seventh century. It might be the original form of Patolli.
The game has a track around the outside with looped corners (very unusual) and a cross in the middle. The game is similar to Nyout and is suggested for four persons, with six beans per player.
Patolli, thought to be for two players or teams, is an Aztec game that Spanish conquerors discovered being played in the mid-1500s. Patolli was a gambling game, with much ceremony preceding play. After players vigorously rubbed the five beans (used in place of dice) in their hands, they threw them on the playing mat, yelling out the name of the Mexican god of gambling, “Macuilxochitl.” The game most likely had a religious meaning, which was the reason the Spanish forbade the game and destroyed the rules and other notations. Boards have been found, showing 68 fields, with arms of two tracks; beans marked with points on one side were used instead of dice. Two spaces along each arm were marked, but it’s unknown whether landing on one of them resulted in a penalty or forfeit, or if the spaces were regarded as safe spots.
